A Surprise Proposal in Seoul

June 28, 2023

I was completely honoured to be asked be a proposal photographer in Seoul for a dear friend of mine. I have known J for many years and he was bringing his girlfriend to visit his home country for the first time. It was going to be a big trip, with lots to plan and so much to see and eat. Little did she know, he was also planning a surprise engagement for her! After some consultations, it was decided that the perfect spot for the proposal would be the Gyeongbokgung Palace (경복궁). It is a beautiful location with a lot of history and a very popular tourist spot, so his girlfriend wouldn’t be suspicious as to why they were going there. As an added bonus, J wouldn’t have to be worried about C’s outfit since it’s common to rent hanboks (South Korean traditional clothing) and wear them around the historical parts of Seoul. Outfit and hair, check! Perfect for a photoshoot.

I scouted locations within Gyeongbokgung Palace a few days prior, finding a spot that would be less crowded and a time that would have good light (always a photographer’s best friend). With everything arranged, the hardest part on the day of was blending into the background with other tourists as J & C casually walked around the grounds. Covertly taking pictures of them while trying not to be recognized as they made their way to the pre-arranged spot.

It was truly a beautiful moment of genuine surprise and happiness. The photos captured will be memories saved, and last a lifetime. The complete look of shock when C realized I was there documenting the whole experience was priceless. Basking in their newly engaged emotion, we went off to explore the rest of the grounds. Click here to take a look to their engagement photos in which we also toured the small alleys and cute streets of neighbouring Bukchon Hanok Village (북촌한옥마을).
